Ausone 1989 1.5L is a large-format bottling of Château Ausone, a Premier Grand Cru Classé estate on the western edge of Saint-Émilion, from the 1989 Bordeaux vintage.
From the Producer
Château Ausone sits on steep, south-facing limestone terraces above the town of Saint-Émilion, on a site the estate traces to the Gallo-Roman poet Ausonius. The vineyard is only around 7 hectares, planted roughly equally to Cabernet Franc and Merlot at high density, and the wine ages in cellars carved into the limestone cliff beneath the château. Because the plot is so small, the estate can pick at an optimal moment across just a couple of afternoons, and total production of the grand vin and its second wine, Chapelle d'Ausone, averages only around 2,000 cases a year — a scarcity that underpins Ausone's standing as one of Bordeaux's most collected Right Bank names.
