Ardbeg 1974 Cask #4375/77 is a rare Islay single malt from a celebrated Ardbeg vintage, bottled at 700mL. Bottlings of this era, distilled at Ardbeg in 1974, were released through specialist cask programmes in the 1990s and remain benchmarks for old-style peated Islay malt.
From the Producer
Ardbeg is a single malt whisky distillery on the south coast of Islay, founded in 1815 and closed for most of the 1980s and 1990s before Glenmorangie plc (now part of the Moët Hennessy portfolio under LVMH) restarted production in 1996 and eventually acquired the distillery. The 1974 vintage is one of the celebrated "Ardbeg years" for collectors, distilled during a period of characterful, lightly oily and intensely peated old-style Ardbeg production that pre-dates the modern still configuration. Cask references such as #4375/77 from this vintage appear in specialist auction and reference records and have historically been released through independent bottling programmes including Signatory.
The distillery sits at Kilarrow on Islay's southern shore and draws its peat and water from the local landscape; that coastal, peated, slightly medicinal house profile is the hallmark of pre-restart Ardbeg.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Peat smoke, lemon oil, tar, seaweed, old oak, wax and medicinal spice.
- Palate: Intense and coastal, with smoke, citrus, malt, pepper, brine and mature oak complexity.
- Finish: Long, smoky and mineral, with lingering citrus, ash and dry spice.
Best For
Best for Ardbeg collectors, old Islay tastings and high-end Scotch portfolios where pre-restart casks form part of the collection.
