About This Wine
Campaccio is the wine Terrabianca built its name on: mostly Sangiovese with a share of Cabernet Sauvignon, typically about 30 percent depending on the year. It is fermented in stainless steel and aged in French oak before bottling. The 1989 comes from the estate's very first years, just after the property changed hands, when the new owners were still working with the existing vines and starting new plantings. A 12-litre bottle, sometimes called a balthazar, holds the equivalent of sixteen standard bottles, and the large volume means the wine inside ages far more slowly than in 750mL.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Dried cherry, cassis, cedar and tobacco, with leather and a herbal lift from the Cabernet.
- Palate: Savoury and mid-weight, with mature red and black fruit and soft tannin.
- Finish: Dry and earthy, finishing on spice and dried herbs.
Serving & Food
A bottle this size needs two people to pour and at least a day standing upright beforehand. Decant in batches, serve at 16 to 17°C, and plan to finish it on the night. Good with a whole roast suckling pig, Florentine T-bone or pappardelle with hare.

About the Winery
Terrabianca, meaning white earth, takes its name from the pale, chalky soils of its hillside near Radda in Chianti. Swiss-born Roberto Guldener and his wife Maja bought the run-down farm in 1988 and began replanting in 1989 on south and south-east slopes of chalk, sand and clay at 250 to 500 metres.
The couple later added a second property in the Maremma. The estate has since changed hands and now trades as Arillo in Terrabianca under the Burkard family.
