The 2021 William Larue Weller is the wheated bourbon of that year's Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, bottled uncut and unfiltered at 125.3 proof. It was distilled in winter 2009 and aged about twelve and a half years.
About This Bourbon
For 2021 the barrels came from five warehouses, C, D, K, L and Q, mostly from the lower floors. Around 64% of the original whiskey was lost to evaporation over the years in wood, which is part of why the result is so concentrated. The barrels were new white oak with a #4 char. The bourbon went into bottle with no water added at 125.3 proof, 62.65% ABV, a little softer than many recent Weller releases.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Crème brûlée, vanilla and caramel, with a little cherry.
- Palate: Rich and mouth-filling, with cherry and toasted graham cracker over wheated sweetness.
- Finish: Long and warming, with cocoa, herbs and oak.
Serving & Food
Pour a small measure into a Glencairn and let it rest a few minutes. At over 62% ABV, a splash of water brings out the crème brûlée side. Good with bread and butter pudding, roast duck with cherries or salted caramel chocolates.

About the Distillery
Buffalo Trace sits in Frankfort, Kentucky's capital, on a bend of the Kentucky River. It is owned by the Sazerac Company, which also bought the W.L. Weller brand in 1999 and has made it at Buffalo Trace ever since.
Every autumn the distillery releases its Antique Collection, a set of older, limited whiskeys whose age and proof change each year. William Larue Weller joined the set in 2005 as its barrel-proof wheated bourbon, and Buffalo Trace publishes the distillation date, warehouses and proof for each release.
