This is the W.L. Weller 19 Year, a 90-proof wheated bourbon released through the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection. It was bottled only for the 2000, 2001 and 2002 collections, and this bottle is from the 2001 release.
About This Bourbon
Before the barrel-proof William Larue Weller joined the Antique Collection in 2005, the wheated slot in the set was held by this 19-year-old. Unlike today's uncut releases, it was reduced to 90 proof, 45% ABV, which gives it a gentler, more open style. Nineteen years is a very long time for a wheated bourbon in Kentucky, where heat pulls oak quickly into the spirit.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Candied fruit, caramel, vanilla and old leather.
- Palate: Soft and rich, with dark sugar, dried fruit, baking spice and polished oak.
- Finish: Mellow, with caramel, oak and warm spice lingering on.
Serving & Food
At 90 proof it needs no water. Pour neat into a small snifter at room temperature and sip slowly. It suits quiet foods: roast almonds, a slice of pound cake or aged Parmigiano.

About the Distillery
William Larue Weller was born in 1825 and in 1849 set up W.L. Weller & Brothers, later W.L. Weller & Sons, as whiskey merchants in Louisville. He is credited with making bourbon with wheat in the mash in place of rye, giving a softer whiskey.
He died in 1899, but the wheated recipe survived him and is now made at Buffalo Trace.
