Wild Turkey 12 Year "Beyond Duplication" is a 12-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at the brand's usual 101 proof. It comes from Wild Turkey's Austin Nichols years and is now collected as a dusty bottle.
About This Bourbon
The 12-year-old 101 with the "Beyond Duplication" label dates from around 1980. By the mid-1980s the US bottling had a gold-foil label, and the 12 Year was discontinued in the US in 1999, though an export version ran until 2013. Some "Beyond Duplication" bottlings were drawn from a selection of 600 barrels. Any bottle from these years would have gone into the barrel at 107 proof.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Dark oak, cherry, caramel, leather and vanilla.
- Palate: Full and mature, with deep caramel, charred oak, tobacco, dark fruit and peppery spice.
- Finish: Long and oaky, with cherry, clove and lingering brown sugar.
Serving & Food
Stand the bottle upright for a day before opening, and ease out the old cork gently. Pour neat into a Glencairn at room temperature and let it breathe for a while. Serve with a good cigar, smoked brisket or a slice of sticky date cake.

About the Distillery
Wild Turkey began as a brand, not a distillery. In 1940 Thomas McCarthy, an executive at Austin, Nichols & Co., came up with the name and the 101-proof strength, and from 1942 the company sold bourbon bought from the Ripy Brothers distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Wild Turkey is still made in Lawrenceburg today.
Pernod Ricard bought Austin Nichols in 1980. Until 2004, Wild Turkey filled its barrels at 107 proof, lower than most competitors, so less water was needed before bottling at 101. That low entry proof is part of the reason old Wild Turkey is valued.
