W.L. Weller C.Y.P.B. stands for "Craft Your Perfect Bourbon". Buffalo Trace made this wheated Kentucky straight bourbon to the specification voted for by bourbon drinkers: about eight years old, aged on the top floors of the warehouse and bottled at 95 proof.

About This Bourbon

In 2015 Buffalo Trace launched a website asking whiskey drinkers to design their ideal bourbon by choosing the recipe, warehouse position, age and proof. More than 100,000 people took part. Most chose a wheated recipe aged about eight years on the highest warehouse floors, where temperatures swing the most, and bottled at 95 proof (47.5% ABV). The first bottling came out in 2018, and it now returns as a limited yearly release.

Tasting Profile

• Nose: Light citrus, vanilla, sweet oak and a little caramel.
• Palate: Rounded and balanced, with soft wheat sweetness, honey and gentle spice.
• Finish: Medium-long, with vanilla, orange zest and a clean oak fade.

Serving & Food

Enjoy it neat at room temperature, or over a single large cube on a humid Hong Kong night. It also makes a gentle Old Fashioned with demerara syrup and orange peel. Good with honey-roast ham, lemon drizzle cake or salted cashews.

About the Distillery

Buffalo Trace sells W.L. Weller as a range of bottlings, each with its own label colour. Special Reserve has a green label and is 90 proof, Antique 107 is red, Single Barrel is orange at 97 proof, Full Proof is blue at 114 proof, the 12 Year is black and C.Y.P.B. is white. William Larue Weller, part of the Antique Collection, is bottled uncut and unfiltered.

All of them use wheat rather than rye as the second grain. The differences come from age, proof, barrel selection and where the barrels spend their years in the warehouse.
