About This Bourbon
It was distilled in 1981 and moved into stainless steel vats in 1998 after 17 years in barrel. The whiskey is attributed to Stitzel-Weller in Louisville, the wheated-bourbon plant made famous by the Van Winkle family. Lots have been bottled at 108.3 to 108.51 proof, and Lot 02 is 108.3 proof (54.15% ABV). Lost Barrel is bottled in 375mL half bottles.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Anise, black cherry, dark caramel, old oak and pipe tobacco.
- Palate: Concentrated and resinous, with toffee, black liquorice, barrel char and warming pepper.
- Finish: Long, with dried cherry, leather, spice and a slow fade of dark sugar.
Serving & Food
Pour 20 to 25mL at a time into a small nosing glass and keep it at room temperature. Add a drop or two of water if you like, but taste it neat first. Serve on its own, or with a square of 70% dark chocolate or a few candied pecans.

About the Distillery
The Lost Barrel whiskey got its name from a practice called tanking. Once a bourbon has reached the age its owner wants, it can be moved from barrel to stainless steel, where it stops taking on oak and stops losing volume to evaporation. Very Olde St. Nick did this with part of the old stock it bought in the 1990s and 2000s, storing the tanks in California.
That tanked whiskey stayed there for many years while the brand changed bottlers. Some of it was eventually bottled in California, and later lots came out after founder Marci Palatella opened Preservation Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky.
