An eight-year-old rye whiskey in Very Olde St. Nick's Ancient Cask livery, sealed in black wax and bottled at 86.8 proof. It is a gentler rye than the brand's barrel-strength seasonal releases.
About This Whiskey
The Ancient Cask 8 Year Rye was not distilled in Kentucky. Collector lists and retailers trace it to Alberta Distillers in Canada, a well-known source of high-rye whiskey, with the bottling done in Bardstown under black wax. This bottling is labelled at 86.8 proof (43.4% ABV).
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Caramel, vanilla, rye spice, orange peel and light oak.
- Palate: Medium-bodied, with sweet grain, toffee, cinnamon and gentle pepper.
- Finish: Smooth and warming, with lingering rye sweetness and a dry spice edge.
Serving & Food
Pour it neat at room temperature, or make a Manhattan with sweet vermouth and a dash of Angostura. At this strength it also mixes well into an Old Fashioned. Good with rye-bread sandwiches of pastrami, pickled vegetables or salted caramel.
How to Enjoy
Rye fans after a softer bottling, and cocktails where you want the rye flavour to come through.

About the Distillery
Very Olde St. Nick is now based at Preservation Distillery + Farm, on a former tobacco farm of about 40 acres outside Bardstown in Nelson County, Kentucky. The distillery was set up by the brand's founder, Marci Palatella, and it distils entirely on pot stills rather than the column stills used by the big Bardstown plants nearby.
Guests can tour the site and taste there. Some Very Olde St. Nick lots are sold only at the distillery, and more recent blends have started to include whiskey made on those pot stills.
