Very Olde St. Nick 17 Year at 94 proof is one of the brand's older-style bottlings, from the period when St. Nick was made largely for Japan. It is long-aged bourbon at a gentle strength.
About This Bourbon
In the Japanese market the St. Nick range ran from an 8 year Estate Reserve up to 25 years, with the 17 Year at 94 proof as a standard step in the ladder alongside a barrel-strength version. Some early 17 Year 94 proof bottles were filled by Julian Van Winkle III at Old Commonwealth, while later ones were bottled by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, so the lot number and back label tell you which era a bottle belongs to. At 94 proof (47% ABV) it drinks softly for its age.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Caramel, vanilla, dried cherry and oak, with a little leather.
- Palate: Mellow and mature: toffee, brown sugar, seasoned wood and light baking spice.
- Finish: Medium-long, soft oak and caramel with gentle spice.
Serving & Food
Serve neat at room temperature; it needs no water. A good bottle to open with friends over slow-roasted pork, a cheese board with dates, or crème caramel.

About the Distillery
The brand belongs to InterBev, the company led by Marci Palatella. As well as buying Kentucky barrels, Palatella was introduced by Julian Van Winkle III to United Distillers, which sold her aging stock it no longer needed.
Much of that whiskey was moved into steel tanks and stored in California to stop it ageing further. It supplied St. Nick bottlings for years before the label settled in Bardstown.
