From the Producer

The Caroni Distillery operated in the Caroni plain of Trinidad from 1918, supplying intensely flavoured, high-ester rum for the Royal Navy and the bulk-blending trade before its closure in 2002 (Wikipedia, 'Luca Gargano'). After the site was abandoned, Luca Gargano of Velier discovered warehouses with barrels of rum from the 1980s aging in the tropical climate, and purchased most of the remaining stock ahead of the distillery's 2005 demolition. Tortuga sits within Velier's numbered, single-cask Caroni programme drawn from that stock; Cask 35 of the Tortuga No. 2 series is a single-barrel 1998 aged 23 years in Trinidad.
