Caroni Guyana 23 Year HTR Blend "The Last" 1996 700mL is a rare Velier release drawn from the final Caroni stocks, built around heavy Trinidad rum character and bottled at 23 years from 1996 distillate.
From the Producer
Caroni was a sugar-cane estate and distillery on the island of Trinidad. The estate's sugar mill had been established in the nineteenth century; the rum distillery itself was founded in 1918 by a group led by Italian immigrants including the Tegel Brothers. Caroni rums were heavy, high-ester, molasses-based rums produced in column stills from a combination of local and imported molasses, and the distillery's output went primarily into the local and Caribbean rum-blending market. Caroni distillery ceased production in 2002 when its parent group restructured, and the buildings were eventually demolished. Italian bottler Velier acquired substantial stocks of Caroni rum after closure and has released them under several themed lines. "HTR" refers to the Heavy Trinidad Rum character of Caroni; "The Last" denotes a bottling built from the final casks drawn from the Velier-controlled inventory of Caroni rum distilled at the Trinidad estate in 1996, before the distillery's closure.
