Category: Scotch

A private single cask of Springbank distilled in 1999 and bottled for the Single Malt Club Stavanger in Norway. It matured in sherry hogshead #363, giving 242 bottles at 45.8% ABV.

About This Whisky

This hogshead was filled with Springbank spirit in 1999 and chosen for the Single Malt Club Stavanger, a Norwegian tasting club. A hogshead holds around 250 litres, smaller than a butt, so the sherry-seasoned wood works a little faster on the spirit. It yielded 242 bottles at 45.8%, a relatively low natural strength that points to a long stay in Campbeltown's damp air.

Tasting Profile

  • Nose: Sherry-toned dried fruit, orange peel, oak and a salty, sea-air lift.
  • Palate: Rounded and oily, with raisin, toffee, spice and Springbank's savoury coastal core.
  • Finish: Long and dry, with salt, oak and gentle warmth.

Serving & Food

Serve neat and unchilled in a copita. At this strength it barely needs water. In keeping with its Norwegian owners, try it with gravlax, brown cheese on crispbread, or smoked reindeer.

How to Enjoy

Club tastings, and those who like softer, sherried single casks.

About the Distillery

Where a cask sits matters as much as what it once held. Springbank matures its whisky in dark, damp warehouses in the heart of Campbeltown, close to the sea at the southern end of the Kintyre peninsula. The distillery credits that peninsula climate, together with its choice of casks, for much of its whisky's flavour. The cool, humid air slows evaporation of water and keeps strengths comparatively gentle over long ageing, and drinkers often point to a salty, coastal note in the whisky. Private casks spend their whole lives in these same warehouses.
