A private-cask Springbank distilled in 1975 and bottled in 2010 at 34 years old. After more than three decades in the cask, it came out at a natural 40.5% ABV, just above the legal minimum for Scotch.
About This Whisky
This whisky was distilled in 1975 and matured in a single cask held in Springbank's warehouses for 34 years before bottling in 2010. Strength falls slowly as a cask ages, and by the time this one was bottled it had drifted down to 40.5%. The result is softer and more fragile than younger cask-strength Springbank, with old-oak and waxy notes typical of long-aged malt.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Beeswax and orchard fruit, old oak, soft smoke and a coastal breeze.
- Palate: Delicate and mature, with fruit, malt, mineral oil and gentle peat.
- Finish: Dry and fairly long, with spice, salt and fading malt.
Serving & Food
Handle it gently: no water, no ice, and a small glass at room temperature. Open it for an occasion and drink the bottle over weeks rather than months. If you want food, keep it simple, with plain shortbread or a few almonds.
How to Enjoy
A 1975 birth-year bottle, or a quiet dram for someone who appreciates old, delicate malt.

About the Distillery
The distillery buildings have seen rough weather. In December 1883 a storm brought down Springbank's chimneys, and in 1904 another gale tore away part of the tun room roof. Both times the Mitchells repaired and carried on. Most of what the distillery makes is bottled as single malt, though a small share goes to blenders or into J&A Mitchell's own blended labels, such as Campbeltown Loch. A cask held back for 34 years, as this one was, sits at the far end of that spectrum: whisky left alone in a Campbeltown warehouse until its owner decided it was ready.
