A private Springbank cask with a family story. Cask #409 was filled on 16 June 1993 as a gift for a baby niece named Florentine, then bottled 24 years later, on 19 June 2017, at 49% ABV. The fresh sherry cask gave 544 bottles.
About This Whisky
In mid-1993 Florentine's uncle, then living in Scotland, bought cask #409 for his niece before she was born, on the condition that she would not take charge of it until she turned 21. It was filled with Springbank spirit on 16 June 1993 and matured in a fresh sherry cask for 24 years. In June 2017 it was bottled with a personal label and shipped to the Netherlands. The cask yielded 544 bottles at 49% ABV.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Sherried dried fruit and orange marmalade, with wax, salted caramel and a faint maritime note.
- Palate: Rounded and oily, with raisins, stone fruit, cinnamon and a savoury, salty streak.
- Finish: Long, with dark chocolate, oak spice and soft smoke.
Serving & Food
Pour neat at room temperature into a small tulip glass. At 49% it drinks easily without water, though a drop can soften the oak. Try it with a slice of stollen, roast pheasant, or aged Comté.

About the Distillery
Springbank reopened its floor maltings in 1992, after years of relying on bought-in malt. So a cask filled in the middle of 1993 holds spirit from barley that was steeped, spread and turned by hand on the distillery's own floors, then kilned over a short peat fire and a long spell of hot air. Since then the distillery has malted all of its own barley, something almost no other Scotch distillery does. The whisky in a private cask like #409 is made exactly as the distillery's own bottlings are, from malting through to bottling in Campbeltown.
