Krug Collection 1996 is the same wine as Krug Vintage 1996, held back in the Krug cellars for a second maturation and released years later - what the house calls a second life. 1996 is one of the rare Champagne years that arrived with high ripeness and unusually high acidity at the same time, and that combination is exactly what rewards the extra decades.
From the Producer
Krug ferments every plot separately in small oak casks, and a Vintage release is one year on its own, with no reserve wines, made only when the house decides the harvest can stand alone. The Collection goes a step further: bottles held back long past the normal release, given a second period of rest in the cellars, and let out only when Krug judges them ready a second time.
Tasting Profile
- Nose: Dried apricot, toasted hazelnut, honey and candied citrus peel, with a smoky note as it opens.
- Palate: Deep and concentrated, the acidity still driving straight through the middle, brioche and dried fruit carried on a creamy texture.
- Finish: Very long, dry and mineral, still holding its tension after all this time.
Best For
Serious Champagne collections, milestone occasions, and side-by-side tastings against a standard-release Krug vintage. Serve around 10-12°C in a white-wine glass rather than a flute.
