Vinturi's inventor, an electrical engineer, set out in 2006 to turn hours of traditional decanting into seconds and had the wine aerator on the market within eight months. The aerator works on the Venturi effect — a liquid speeds up as it moves from a wide section into a narrow one, and as the wine accelerates through the narrow section of the Vinturi it draws air in through side holes, creating the tool's distinctive aeration sound. Each unit is a single, uni-body resin mold rather than a two-piece assembly, made from an alcohol-safe, food-grade, clear resin; the manufacturer individually tests every Vinturi because a deviation of more than five one-thousandths of an inch in the mold will stop it aerating properly.
